Cavitation damage prediction in mercury target for pulsed spallation neutron source using Monte Carlo simulation

Cavitation damage on the mercury target vessel is induced by proton beam injection in mercury. The prediction method of the cavitation damage using Monte Carlo simulations was proposed taking into account of the uncertainties of the position of cavitation bubbles and impact pressure distributions. The distribution of impact pressure attributed to individual cavitation bubble collapsing was assumed to be the Gaussian distribution, and the probability distribution of the maximum value of impact pressures was assumed to be three kinds of distributions; the delta function, the Gaussian and Weibull distributions. Two parameters were estimated using Bayesian optimization by comparing the distribution of the cavitation damage obtained from experiment with that of accumulated plastic strain obtained from the simulation. It was found that the results obtained using the Weibull distribution reproduced the actual cavitation erosion phenomenon better than the other results.

Cavitation damage on the inner surface of the mercury target for the spallation neutron source occurs by proton bombarding in mercury. The prediction method of the cavitation damage using Monte Carlo simulations was suggested taking variability of the bubble core position and impact pressure distribution into account. The impact pressure distribution was estimated using the inverse analysis with Bayesian optimization was conducted with comparison between cavitation damage distribution obtained from experiment and the cumulative plastic strain distribution obtained from simulation. The average value and spread of maximum impact pressure estimated assuming the Gaussian distribution were 3.1 GPa and 1.2 $$mu$$m, respectively. Simulation results reproduced experimental results and it can be said that this evaluation method is useful.

The Task force on maintenance optimization of nuclear facilities was organized in the Nuclear Science Research Institute (NSRI) of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) since November 2020, in order to adequately respond to "the New nuclear regulatory inspection system since FY 2020" and to continuously improve the facility maintenance activities. In 2021, the task force has studied (1) optimization of the importance classification on maintenance and inspection of nuclear facilities, and (2) improvement in setting and evaluation of the performance indicators on safety, maintenance and quality management activities, considering "the Graded approach" that is one of the basic methodologies in the new nuclear regulatory inspection system. Each nuclear facility (research reactors, nuclear fuel material usage facilities, others) in the NSRI will steadily improve their respective safety, maintenance and quality management activities, referring the review results suggested by the task force.

The new critical assembly STACY will be able to contribute to the validation of criticality calculations related to the fuel debris. The experimental core designs are in progress in the frame of JAEA/IRSN collaboration. This paper presents the method applied to optimize the design of the new STACY core to measure the criticality characteristics of pseudo fuel debris that simulated Molten Core Concrete Interaction (MCCI) of the fuel debris. To ensure that a core configuration is relevant for code validation, it is important to evaluate the reactivity worth of the main isotopes of interest and their k$$_{rm eff}$$ sensitivity to their cross sections. In the case of the fuel debris described in this study, especially for the concrete composition, silicon is the nucleus with the highest k$$_{rm eff}$$ sensitivity to the cross section. For this purpose, some parameters of the core configuration, as for example the lattice pitches or the core dimensions, were adjusted using optimization algorithm to find efficiently the optimal core configurations to obtain high sensitivity of silicon capture cross section. Based on these results, realistic series of experiments for fuel debris in the new STACY could be defined to obtain an interesting feedback for the MCCI. This methodology is useful to design other experimental conditions of the new STACY.

Optimizing long-term monitoring of radiation air-dose rates after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

We have developed a methodology for optimizing the monitoring locations of radiation air dose-rate monitoring. For the method, we use a Gaussian mixture model to identify the representative locations among multiple environmental variables, such as elevation and land-cover types. Next, we use a Gaussian process model to capture and estimate the heterogeneity of air-dose rates across the domain. Our results have shown that this approach allows us to select monitoring locations in a systematic manner such that the heterogeneity of air dose rates is captured by the minimal number of monitoring locations.

Estimation of planes of a rock mass in a gallery wall from point cloud data based on MD PSO

LiDAR (laser imaging detection and ranging) has been developed to obtain a high-resolution point cloud data indicating the detailed 3D shapes of an object. To identify discontinuities in a rock mass of a tunnel gallery wall, it is necessary to approximate the rock mass surface with small planes. Normal vectors of the planes are important to identify discontinuities. We developed an algorithm for estimation of planes based on multi-dimensional particle swarm optimization (MD PSO) from point cloud data. Point cloud data were segmented into bounding boxes and grouped into clusters by MD PSO. Planes were estimated using the least squares method for point cloud data in the respective clusters. The newly developed MD PSO algorithm was evaluated using point cloud data obtained from a gallery wall. Evaluation was carried out in comparison with the previous developed variable-box segmentation (VBS) algorithm. The MD PSO-based algorithm showed a 7% higher accuracy than that of the VBS algorithm.

Study of chemical etching conditions for alpha-particle detection and visualization using solid state nuclear track detectors

We evaluate radon/thoron and its progeny concentration using passive-type monitors using CR-39 plates. After exposure, it is necessary to do chemical etching for CR-39 plates. In the present study, we considered shortening of chemical etching time for CR-39 and enlargement of the track diameter (i.e. etch pit diameter) aiming for introduction of automatic counting system in the future. Optimum conditions were determined by changing solution concentration, solution temperature and etching time. As a result, the optimized conditions (concentration, temperature and etching time) were determined to be 8 M NaOH solution, 75 degrees Celsius and 10 hours. This result of etching time showed that the chemical etching was completed in less than half of conventional etching time. Furthermore, it was suggested that shorter etching time would be possible if we do not consider the enlargement of conventional track diameter.

This paper (presentation) reports on the design study for seeking compactness of moderator (and reflector) structure for the Delayed Gamma-ray Spectroscopy Non Destructive Assay system to be applied for verification of fissile isotopic (Pu-239, Pu-241 and U-235) composition ratio in High Radioactive Nuclear Material sample such as dissolved solution of reprocessing facility. We first investigated advantages and disadvantages of using different compact neutron sources as DT and DD neutron generators. This led us to the conclusion of using DD sources to achieve a compact (and practical) NDA system. Based on MCNP simulations, with the use of a DD neutron generator, a preliminary optimization study was performed and will be shown here.

In particle analysis for safeguards environmental samples, the fission track technique is very important to detect sub-micrometer particles containing uranium. In the technique the authors developed, the particles were recovered onto the polycarbonate membrane filter. The filter was dissolved in solvent and dried to form a thin film of detector, in which the particles were confined. After thermal neutron irradiation and etching, the particles of interest in the detector were easily identified with fission tracks, and were picked up for isotope ratio analysis. It was found, however, that the particles in the vicinity of the detector surface may fall off during the etching process. Therefore, optimization of the etching condition is required. In this work, the effects of etching time and enrichment of uranium in particles were investigated. Preliminary results suggest that etching time should be shorter with the increase in the enrichment.

Optimization of poisoned and unpoisoned decoupled moderators in JSNS

For two decoupled moderators in JSNS, optimization studies were performed by model calculations using NMTC/JAM and MCNP-4C codes. The model was based on a realistic Target-Moderator-Reflector Assembly. We assumed a para-hydrogen ratio of 100%. The shape of poisoned and unpoisoned moderators is a canteen type with dimensions of 13$$^W$$$$times$$12$$^H$$$$times$$6.2$$^T$$ cm$$^3$$. A decoupling energy of about 1 eV was adopted to meet the user's requests. As a decoupler material we selected silver-indium-cadmium alloy. It was found that for the decoupled moderators, especially the poisoned moderator, pulse broadening due to a finite beam-extraction angle ($$theta$$) was very serious. Therefore, $$theta$$ for the poisoned and the unpoisoned moderators were limited to be 7.5$$^{circ}$$ and 17.5$$^{circ}$$, respectively. Cadmium (Cd) was selected as a poison material due to higher cut-off energy than gadolinium and higher peak intensity with narrower pulse width. The poison plate will be placed at 25 mm from the viewed surface which meets the user's requirements.

Neutronic optimization of premoderator and reflector for decoupled hydrogen moderator in 1MW spallation neutron source

For a decoupled hydrogen (super critical) moderator, optimization studies have been performed on a premoderator and reflector material (Pb, Be, Fe and Hg) together with the decoupling energy to realize a higher neutronic performance. The result indicated that the best neutronic performance could be obtained for a decoupled H$$_2$$ moderator in a Pb reflector by optimizing the premoderator and adopting an appropriate decoupling energy, even compared with optimized one in a Be reflector.

Optimizing the fabrication process for excellent mechanical properties in stoichiometric SiC fiber/FCVI SiC matrix composites

Process optimization for Forced-thermal gradient Chemical Vapor Infiltration (FCVI) fabrication of 75 mm diameter size SiC composites with advanced SiC fibers; Hi-Nicalon Type S and Tyranno SA, was carried out. The SiC/SiC composites fabricated by FCVI exhibited significant reduction in porosity (15.1%) and more uniform pore distribution by decreasing the MTS and H$$_{2}$$ gases flow rates in the latter part of the FCVI process. The tensile strength of the both composites using Hi-Nicalon Type S or Tyranno SA fibers was slightly increased with increased thickness of carbon interphase in the range of 75-300 nm. In order to perform the comparative testing required to directly compare the thermomechanical property changes following neutron irradiation, larger composites with uniform microstructural property are required. From the results of process optimization for fabrication of 75 mm diameter size FCVI SiC/SiC composites, the definitive purpose in this study is the fabrication of the 300 mm diameter size SiC/SiC composite with the uniform microstructural properties.

Premoderator optimization of decoupled hydrogen moderator

An optimization study on the premoderator, the reflector material choice and a length of the liner is carried out for the design of high performance decoupled hydrogen moderator. NMTC/JAM and MCNP-4C are used for the neutronics calculation. The result indicates that, assuming premoderator dimensions and decoupling energy is controlled, the decoupled hydrogen moderator with a premoderator can provide better pulse characteristics than that without the premoderator for a Be reflector. On the selection of the reflector material, it is clearly shown that Pb and Hg reflectors give merits in using the premoderator for higher intensity and reduction of energy deposition in moderator. It is also shown that a H2O premoderator provides a short tail while a D2O premoderator provides the high peak intensity. Minimum liner length is evaluated to be 20 cm from the viewpoint of neutronics.
